DEPARTMENT: Camp Kuratli at Trestle Glen

POSITION TITLE: Counselor

STATUS: Temporary

SUPERVISOR: Lead Counselor

SCOPE OF POSITION: Guide cabin group of 8-12 campers through successful participation in all aspects of the residential summer camp program.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

o High School Diploma/ GED minimum requirement

o Prior youth work preferred

o Must be at least 18 years of age

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

o Live in a cabin and provide consistent and active supervision, promote group unity, and learn about each individual camper's need.

o Guide, direct, and monitor an assigned cabin of campers during scheduled daily camp activities and programs such as cabin clean up, meal-times, evening activities, transitional times and overnight.

o Communicate regularly with the Lead Counselor, conveying needs and concerns regarding campers.

o Handle any behavior and/or emotional issues under the guidance of the lead counselor.

o Supervise, actively engage, and lead campers during assigned program time when on-duty.

o Respond to, and provide opportunities for discussion of, individual or group problems or concerns among campers.

o Develop and lead age-appropriate cabin activities.

o Lead Bible devotions daily and spiritually counsel campers.

o Turn in all camper related forms in a timely manner, such as seeker forms, incident forms and safety reports.

o Develop and implement cabin rules that are compliant with camp policies and procedures.

o Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sportsmanship, and table manners.

o Adhere to camp health codes and safety guidelines for all campers.

o Lead, counsel, and direct an assigned Counselor in Training (CIT) staff regarding your assigned campers and activities.

o Report immediately any issues or concerns regarding assigned CIT to the Lead Counselor.

General Duties:

o Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways in campers and CIT staff.

o Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.

o Work alongside and in agreement with the Divisional Youth Leaders, other divisional officers and special guests as directed.

o Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers and campers.

o Encourage adherence to camp & Salvation Army policies and procedures.

o Ensure and provide for the supervision and physical/emotional safety of campers and staff.

o Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g. chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.

o Ensure and assist in the cleanliness of your cabin and outside area.

o Perform any other duties as assigned by the program director, Divisional Youth Secretaries or camp director.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

o Be a Christian with a strong, demonstrated commitment to following Jesus Christ, and biblical principles, who is enthusiastic, energetic, and creative in spiritual leadership.

o Possess leadership skills, with the ability to supervise and care for a cabin of campers 24 hours a day.

o Ability to communicate well with others from diverse backgrounds, ages and nationalities.

o Ability to work in groups and provide necessary guidance to campers.

o Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforces safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.

o Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to activity.

o Must be patient, enthusiastic and be able to teach and lead a variety of small group activities.

o Ability to accept supervision and guidance.

o Strong character and integrity, with the ability to adapt to a camp environment.

o Responsible individual with a desire to work with youth.

o Detail oriented.

o Self-starter.

o Team player.

o Good use of the English language in verbal and written communication

o Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure

o Good analytical skills.

o Ability and willingness to keep information confidential.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

o Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike and twist on a continuous basis

o Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead

o Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

o Physical ability to respond appropriately to a variety of situations; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

o There may be phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.

o May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility, and grounds.

o The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment.

o Possible exposure to communicable diseases.

o Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.

o Works around dust, odor, and high noise levels.


MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
